Setting up PIA Dedicated IP and VPN

For an additional layer of security for our client web sites as well as bypassing Sucuri or CloudFlare restrictions, we need to whitelist our developer IP addresses.  However, since all of our IPs are dynamic and could possibly change, it’s best to have a service like PIA (Private Internet Access) that provides dedicated IP addresses. In addition to dedicated IP addresses, they also provide VPN (Virtual Private Network).

A benefit of VPN is that we can connect to servers across the world in many countries and see what our client sites look like from the perspective of each country.  This does not include performance.  But it will include accessibility and UI.

Using PIA can be used for whitelisting, viewing sites from around the world and securing one’s Internet communications better.

PIA included a 10 simultaneous user license, we 10 devices can be using the service and dedicated IP at the same time.  Personal use of this is permitted.

The dedicated IP address is:  191.96.121.95 and located in Chicago, near our data center

Download the PIA client from: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/download

Note: Since this is a VPN, you really only want to use it when you are working on sites as there is always network speed loss because of the overhead.

Setting Up PIA for Windows

  2. Login using the account info in Keepass (search for PIA).

Using PIA
  1. Run the PIA client, if it isn’t already running.
  2. In the VPN SERVER section, probably lower down the screen, make sure the Dedicated IP server is selected.
  3. To Select a different server, click on the arrow to the right and Click on the Server with Dedicated IP noted. This is where servers in other countries can be selected for VPN. After selecting a server, you’re taken back to the main PIA screen.
  4. To connect to the VPN, click the Up Arrow at the bottom of the PIA application window. This will compress the view and show you a power button. Yellow means it is not connected, Green means it is connected. If Yellow, click to connect to VPN and it will turn green.
